Bylaws Amendments Approved by GALA Members
GALA members recently voted on four proposed amendments to the association’s bylaws. Each measure passed with strong support, receiving less than 10% opposition. A full report of the results is available here.
The amendments were designed to streamline operations, strengthen governance, and broaden inclusivity within our community. They include:
- Removal of Goals from the Bylaws
GALA’s goals will continue to be set through the annual strategic planning process, ensuring they remain current and responsive to industry needs. - Opening the Door to Individual Membership
The board now can create a new membership category for individual professionals, expanding eligibility and welcoming a wider, more diverse audience. - Retirement of the Nominating Committee
After testing this approach, GALA will return to its long-standing practice of open self-nominations for board elections, which has served the association well for more than 20 years. - Extending Board Terms from 2 to 3 Years
Beginning with this year’s elections, newly elected board members will serve three-year terms, providing greater continuity and support for effective leadership. Current board members will complete their existing two-year terms.
What’s Next
This year’s board elections will follow GALA’s traditional process: eligible members may self-nominate to run for the board. The three winning candidates will each serve a three-year term. More information is available in our Board Elections FAQ.
Meanwhile, the board and staff are developing a refreshed membership model that will likely include categories for companies, universities, nonprofits, and individuals. A member focus group has already provided input, and a survey may follow later this year. The new model is planned for introduction in January 2026.
