GALA Annual Survey 2026 Findings

GALA News,

What Our Community Told Us About Priorities and the Road Ahead

Each year, GALA’s Annual Survey offers a candid look at how our community experiences the association. We find out what’s working well and where we must improve, and we gauge the community’s sentiments about the association and the value we create.

With 214 total respondents, the 2026 survey arrives at a particularly important moment, as the language industry grapples with rapid technological change, global economic pressure, and shifting professional identities.

Taken together, the responses paint a clear picture: this is a community that places high value on connection and learning, while also calling for steady leadership during a time of transformation.

Who Responded

Among survey participants, 58% identified as current GALA members, while 42% were nonmembers, providing a balanced view of both engagement and opportunity. Many respondents also participate in other industry organizations (most often national or regional associations) highlighting a broader trend: professionals seek value across multiple communities rather than relying on a single one.

Why Members Join — and Why They Stay

The strongest driver of GALA membership is clear: learning. Eighty percent of members pointed to information about industry trends, best practices, and technologies as a key reason for joining. Close behind was the value of professional community and peer exchange, cited by 66% of respondents.

Encouragingly, these expectations are largely being met. Eighty-four percent of members rate their GALA membership as “valuable” or “very valuable,” reinforcing the strength of the association’s core offerings.

Barriers Remain — Especially Cost

Despite strong perceived value, budgetary constraints remain the single biggest hurdle for both joining and renewing membership. Open-ended responses add important context, particularly from freelancers, small and medium-sized enterprises, and professionals in emerging markets. Many noted that membership fees feel misaligned with local economic realities.

At the same time, respondents expressed appreciation for recent efforts to address these challenges, including the introduction of professional (individual) memberships, which many respondents explicitly welcomed.

How the Community Engages with GALA

Survey data shows that webinars are the most consistently used GALA offering, with nearly all respondents engaging with them at least occasionally. Business reports, the Resource Center, and benchmarking surveys also see strong use, underscoring the demand for practical, insight-driven content.

Participation drops, however, when it comes to volunteering and content contribution. This suggests untapped potential for deeper involvement if barriers related to time and perceived value can be reduced.

Content Formats and Topics That Matter Most

When asked which formats they find most useful, respondents overwhelmingly favored:

  • Webinars (79%)
  • Business reports (47%)
  • In-depth articles and quick-read blogs, which ranked nearly equally

Topic interest rankings leave little ambiguity: technology (particularly AI, automation, and machine translation) dominates, followed by linguistic quality, business development, and leadership.

That said, write-in responses strike a consistent note: less hype, more reality. Respondents are asking for practical case studies, ethical clarity, transparent conversations about pricing disruption, and honest discussion about workforce sustainability in an AI-shaped future.

How GALA Is Seen Today

When asked what comes to mind when thinking of GALA, respondents most frequently used words like community, network, learning, and global, reinforcing GALA’s role as a trusted gathering place for the industry.

Critical perspectives also emerged. Some respondents pointed to perceived exclusivity, cost concerns, vendor dominance, and a desire for more diverse voices—particularly freelancers, client-side professionals, and perspectives from regions beyond the US and Europe. This means that we must do a better job communicating the value of GALA membership and who benefits from it. (Fun fact: client-side companies comprise 20% of GALA membership.)

Impact, Engagement, and the Path Forward

Three quarters of respondents agree that GALA has a positive impact on their professional life and career, and most feel reasonably engaged with the association. At the same time, the survey highlights a notable neutral segment: professionals who value GALA but find it difficult to participate fully. That tension defines the opportunity ahead.
