The language services field has been substantially affected and transformed by the introduction of different language technologies. Consequently the role of translators has changed rapidly in an industry strongly marked by digitalization and automation. Will translators’ work be consumed up by AI? Our answer to this question is an absolute NO. Language and communication are (and will continue to be) paramount in globalization. This session will present the results of a study carried out at Dublin City University, analyzing industry trends and skills and competences that will play an important role in the (not-so distant) future job market. We present a highly-technologized, "tech-symbiotic" role to succeed in the automation age: the language engineer. Language engineers will work in many fields of specialization and in future-proof domains like NLP, creative sectors of communication, and human-computer interaction and international UX. Fear not; there is a bright future for translators.
