The talent gap for the language industry was identified a decade ago as one of our growth constraints. As the industry grows and as technology integrates into our workflows, we need more young people coming into the industry in every role. The American Translators Association and the Association of Language Companies have ramped up their efforts to engage the American educational system, in order to grow the talent pipeline, for translators, interpreters, localizers, project managers, and business leaders for the language industry. ALC, ATA, and GALA are working collaboratively to identify academic programs, to offer internships to students, and to offer adjunct faculty from the industry. The ALC Bridge initiative (alcbridge.org) serves as a neutral platform to facilitate collaboration between industry and the educational sector. Moreover, the new Federal administration in the US has indicated its interest in supporting these types of collaboration. The session will present the current state of play, demonstrate current collaborations at the company and school/university level, and invite participants to engage with curriculum development, instruction, and internships.
