Rising Star Scholarship Contest Official Rules

This scholarship prize is sponsored by The Globalization and Localization Association (“GALA”), a non-profit 501 (c)(6) organization registered in the United States.

By participating, all entrants acknowledge and agree that they have entered the contest of their own free will, that the full rules and details of the contest have been made available to them in writing and they therefore understand and agree that neither GALA, its agents, affiliates, sponsors, representatives or employees have any liability with respect to any damages arising out of participation in the contest or acceptance and use of a prize. By entering this promotion, participants agree to be bound by these rules.

The student scholarship contest is only open to students enrolled in or that graduated in 2023 from translation, localization, or interpreting programs at the university level. The faculty scholarship contest is open to faculty/instructors of translation, localization, or interpreting courses at a university. Instructors must have taught a full quarter- or semester-long course within the current calendar year (2023).

Timeline: Deadline for entries is 20 November 2023 by 5:00 pm PST. The winning entrants will be notified by the end of December 2023.

Applications must be submitted in English via the online form in the format requested on the form.

The Prize Package

Each winner will receive a prize package to attend GALA's annual conference. The prize includes a full conference registration, a ticket to GALA's conference dinner, and reimbursement of travel/lodging expenses to attend the conference. Travel/lodging expenses are limited to travel costs from winner’s home city to the conference city, hotel costs for one individual for 3 nights, travel between the airport and hotel, and a per diem. Winners are expected to travel economy class, and airfare shall not be booked without prior approval. Any additional expenses will be the winner’s responsibility. Appropriate documentation must be provided prior to receiving reimbursement. No cash equilivant will be provided.

Contest Rules

Each submission may only be created by one student or one faculty member. Team submissions will not be considered. Applicants are welcome to have their submission edited by other individuals, but content must be original. All referenced sources should be cited in a works cited section at the end. Citations will not count towards the total word count. Choose any citation style, just be consistent throughout. Automated or robotic entries submitted by individuals or organizations will be disqualified. All entries must be made by the entrant as self-identified by the entrant. Final eligibility for the award of any prize is subject to eligibility verification in GALA’s sole discretion.

The awarding of the Rising Star Scholarship prize packages will be held as follows: all eligible entrants will be reviewed by the Rising Star Scholarship Committee. Winners will be notified end of December via email. Winners must confirm via email that they will attend within one week of being notified. If you are unable to attend or we do not receive your confirmation, a new winner will be selected.

You must be 18 years of age or older to win. No purchase necessary. Void where prohibited.

GALA assumes no responsibility or liability for (a) any incorrect or inaccurate entry information, (b) any faulty or failed electronic data transmissions; (c) any unauthorized access to, or theft, destruction or alteration of entries at any point in the operation of this contest; (d) any technical malfunction, failure, error, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, delay in operation or communications line failure, regardless of cause, with regard to any equipment, systems, networks, lines, satellites, servers, camera, computers or providers utilized in any aspect of the operation of the contest; (e) inaccessibility or unavailability of any network or wireless service, the Internet or website or any combination thereof; (f) suspended or discontinued Internet, wireless or landline phone service; or (g) any injury or damage to participant's or to any other person’s computer or mobile device which may be related to or resulting from any attempt to participate in the contest.

If, for any reason, the scholarship contest is not capable of running as planned for reasons which may include without limitation, infection by computer virus, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or any other causes which may corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity or proper conduct of this contest, GALA reserves the right at its sole discretion to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the contest in whole or in part. In such event, GALA shall not have any further obligation to any participant in connection with the contest.

GALA, and its officers, directors and employees are ineligible to enter the contest or win a prize. Household Members and Immediate Family Members of such individuals are also not eligible to enter or win. "Household Members" shall mean those people who share the same residence at least three months a year. "Immediate Family Members" shall mean parents, step-parents, legal guardians, children, step-children, siblings, step-siblings, or spouses.

GALA is responsible for the collection, submission or processing of entries and the overall administration of the contest. Entrants should look solely to GALA with any questions, comments or problems related to the contest. GALA may be reached by email at [email protected].

This contest is subject to all applicable laws and regulations and is void where prohibited by law. Participation constitutes full and unconditional agreement to these official rules and GALA’s decisions, which are final and binding in all contest matters. GALA and its affiliates and assigns are not responsible for any error in the offering or announcement of any prize or in the administration of the contest. In the event there is a discrepancy or inconsistency between disclosures or other statements contained in any promotional materials and the terms and conditions of these official rules, these official rules shall prevail, govern and control.

GALA reserves the right to prohibit the participation of any individual in GALA’s sole discretion. To the maximum extent permitted by law, GALA reserves the right to change these official rules at any time.

Certification, Copyright, and Disclaimer

By entering the contest, you certify that the application materials you are submitting has no conflicting claims of copyright and that nothing related to your entry violates or infringes upon another person’s copyright.

By entering the contest, you agree that GALA may use your content in publications, promotional materials, presentations, and websites. In addition, you grant GALA a worldwide, nonexclusive, royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable and fully sub-licensable right to use your name, city, state and country of residence, and the essay that you submit (“Submitted Content”), for advertising, commercial and publicity purposes. Such use is permitted in any and all media now in existence or hereinafter created for purposes of advertising and trade without further compensation, except in Tennessee or as otherwise prohibited by law. GALA reserves the right, at its discretion, to modify, edit, adapt or reproduce Submitted Content in full or in part, but GALA is not obligated to publish or use any Submitted Content.

By entering this contest, you agree to release and hold harmless GALA and its employees, officers, affiliates, agents, and advertising, design and promotional agencies from any and all damages, injuries, claims, causes of actions, or losses of any kind resulting from your participation in this contest, including infringement of intellectual property rights.

The approximate value of each prize package is US $3000. The approximate value of the prize represents GALA’s good faith determination. That determination is final and binding and cannot be appealed. If the actual value of the prize turns out to be less than the stated approximate value, the difference will not be awarded in cash. Scholarship prizes cannot be transferred, redeemed for cash or substituted by winner. GALA reserves the right in its sole and absolute discretion to award a substitute prize of equal or greater value if a prize described is unavailable or cannot be awarded, in whole or in part, for any reason. Restrictions, conditions, and limitations may apply. All federal, state and/or local taxes, fees, and surcharges are the sole responsibility of the prize winner. Failure to comply with these official rules will result in forfeiture of the prize.
