The Case for Belonging to GALA
Why language professionals join GALA, in their own words
There is a difference between working in an industry and belonging to one. Most people in localization only see inside a single company. They watch a market that moves too fast for any one person to track alone, and AI is only accelerating that pace. Membership in GALA is how thousands of professionals in more than 60 countries close that knowledge gap.
We could describe the value ourselves (and we have). Now it’s time for our members to do it.
Built by practitioners, for practitioners
GALA exists because knowledge in this field moves too fast for any single organization to keep up. Our webinars, articles, benchmarking, and GALA Academy programs are built on a simple premise: the people doing the work are the people best positioned to teach it. The association's job is to convene them, curate what they know, and make it usable by everybody else. It’s diverse by design, drawing on perspectives from across roles and regions.
Members tell us the effect shows up inside their own teams.
“I witnessed my team members grow through all the useful resources.”
– Maria Thanou, Formerly at Booking.com
Some go further and build GALA into how they develop their teams.
“We added GALA as a part of the training for new staff members, because we believe that being connected to the industry has great value and can be inspiring and eye-opening to many of us. Everyone can find inspiring content on the GALA website, join a webinar, or read research on a subject that actually matters for them.”
– Monika Wiatrowska, Formerly at Avantpage
For organizational members, GALA is a company-wide asset, meaning a project coordinator, a technology lead, and a marketing manager can all find something relevant on the same platform. And they’re learning from others in those same roles, not from someone who's selling something.
Learning you can trust
Educational value depends entirely on whether the teaching is grounded in practice. GALA is a community of practitioners with a wide range of experiences and perspectives. This experience-based know-how underpins GALA’s educational content.
“GALA has always attracted me as an organization where an open and honest dialog was, and is, possible between LSPs of all sizes, technology providers, and buyers. GALA to me is more of an open forum than a promo event, and to me this is the biggest attraction.”
– Olga Beregovaya, Welocalize
Bringing service providers, technology companies, buyers, and academics into the same room is deliberate. It is also difficult, and it is the reason the conversation stays candid. When everyone can learn from someone else, no one needs to perform.
“The GALA Community is unbelievably motivating. We share, we have nothing to prove to each other, so it ends up being honest and intelligent knowledge sharing, and pain and hope sharing, without any hyperbole and pretending.”
– Tea Dietterich, 2M Language Services
A steady reference point
The past few years have been disorienting for everyone in this industry. Members consistently describe GALA as the place they go to find clarity.
“GALA is somehow the soul of the industry and a bit of a compass in these times of uncertainty. As an industry that is big and niche, we can be quite isolated. We connect online and are overwhelmed with information. It's reassuring to be able to talk in person to knowledgeable and experienced colleagues and to the newbies in an environment that is equally formal, professional, and friendly.”
– Marta Romaní, Ampersand Traducciones
Isolation is a real business risk. Companies that lack a reliable vision of where the market is heading make slower decisions. Membership is a standing connection to peers who are working through the same questions at the same time. And we do it year-round.
The more you engage, the more you get
The members who get the most from GALA are the ones who engage. They speak, they join committees and special interest groups, they serve on the board, they present at conferences.
“Presenting a soapbox mini-talk at the GALA annual conference was a fantastic conversation starter. I felt more involved in the community and that there was space to have meaningful exchanges on difficult topics.”
– Annelise Finegan, New York University
That is the offer. Membership gives you a body of practical education developed by the people who use it, a global network that answers when you call, and a platform to shape where this industry goes next.
