Ann Huehls’s professional pivot - from translation to technology - came just as the letters N-M-T made headlines and speculation swirled that translators would soon be obsolete. And two more pivots have happened in the last five years. At the time, these shifts were unremarkable. Today, reskilling is frequently suggested as a strategy - or necessity - to stay (relevant) in the language industry as AI reshapes so many facets of business, process, and technology. But what opportunities exist, and what does it take to get there?

This session will explore potential avenues for reskilling that have adjacencies to language and language technology: conversation design (or conversational AI) and data analysis.

Together with Ann, we will look at what these roles entail and how they relate to language, as well as cover the skills (and time) needed to get started and examine some real examples of tasks and projects from these professions.

Target audience

Translators, project managers, and technology practitioners in the language space.

Takeaways

1. There are many opportunities for reskilling that maintain a connection to language

2. An overview of conversation design and what it takes to reskill

3. Data analysis offers the technically inclined a path to level up and see language technology (and data!) from a new, strategic perspective
