[INCLUSIVE LANGUAGE SIG] The Rise of Gender-Inclusive Language Around The World
Only about a decade ago, when the Spanish terms latinx and latine began circulating in activist circles and online publications, they were some of the only gender-inclusive forms known by the world besides the English personal pronoun they. Since that time, though they have continued to spark fierce debate about language, gender, and culture, gender-inclusive forms have been proliferated out of necessity by nonbinary, trans, and other queer speakers of languages that lack adequate forms of self-identification.
Now, gender-inclusive systems exist for almost all of the major modern Romance languages, including Portuguese, French, Catalan, and Italian, and other gender-inclusive proposals have been made and employed to varying degrees in Tagalog, Irish, Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, Hebrew, and Danish, among others.
While the gendered constraints of each language vary dramatically, gender-inclusivity has coalesced around a few common strategies, such as expanding the use of existing gender-neutral forms of expression and exploiting patterns of word formation to create distinct gender-inclusive forms.
In this presentation, Ben Papadopoulos will give a brief history of gender-inclusive language before giving an overview of the strategies found in typologically distinct languages, all the while highlighting the importance of our sensitivity towards diverse human identities in gender-specific translation.

Ben Papadopoulos
Ben (he/they) is a sociolinguist and recent PhD graduate from the University of California, Berkeley. His doctoral dissertation, entitled "A Humanistic Theory of Gender in Language" elaborates a typology of the features of gender found in the languages of the world and offers a previously nonexistent definition of the concept of "linguistic gender" that may be used to identify content that directly marks the gender of human subjects. Relatedly, he is the founder of the Gender in Language Project (genderinlanguage.com), a developing resource that offers grammars of gender in different languages. He defends the topic of his research, gender-inclusive language, as a fundamental human rights issue for trans, nonbinary, and other gender-nonconforming speakers who require access to it.
