Machine Interpreting in clinical settings: From Research to Responsible Deployment

Machine interpreting (MI) technology is advancing rapidly, with applications across both conference and healthcare settings, and with LLM-enhanced cascades as well as end-to-end speech translation models are either already in deployment or on the immediate horizon.
This makes it both timely and necessary to assess where the technology stands today, what it can and cannot currently deliver in clinical contexts, and what responsible adoption looks like.
This panel brings together researchers, technology providers, and healthcare stakeholders to address some of the most pressing questions facing the field.
- What does current MI performance actually look like in doctor-patient communication?
- Which clinical scenarios appear most suitable for MI today, and where do significant limitations remain? And what does the research evidence tell us about accuracy, safety, and usability?
- How do data security, patient consent, liability for mistranslation, and clinical governance requirements shape deployment decisions?
- What is the current level of awareness and interest in MI among healthcare organizations?
- Looking Ahead, how might LLM integration, end-to-end models, and other recent advances reshape the technology over the next several years?
The goal is a candid, evidence-grounded conversation among the people building the technology, the researchers evaluating it, and the healthcare organizations being asked to trust it.

Danlu Yang is a translation and interpreting researcher. She is a 3rd-year PhD student in applied anthropology at Oregon State University, focusing on AI-enabled healthcare communication system. Her research focuses on two intersecting problems: the human interpreter workforce and the absence of compliance frameworks governing computer-assisted interpreting and machine translation in healthcare settings.
Mustafa Keshkeia is currently a final-year PhD student at the School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies (SALIS), Dublin City University (DCU). His research examines the role of interpreting/translation in multidirectional risk and crisis communication between different stakeholders and the growing Arabic-speaking population in Ireland. Since 2022, Mustafa has been conducting his research and continuing his practice as a professional (English-Arabic) interpreter/translator in Ireland. Mustafa is currently the coordinator of a research project aimed at reviewing the current status and improving the provision of healthcare interpreting for patients with limited English in Tallaght University Hospital in Dublin.

Aki Hayashi is Senior Strategic Enterprise & Partner Manager at Wordly, where she makes multilingual experiences more accessible, practical, and sustainable for organizations navigating the rise of AI-powered interpreting.
Aki brings deep client-side globalization experience, having led enterprise localization, interpreting and event globalization, and accessibility programs across large-scale global organizations. Her background includes building scalable language access strategies and helping teams connect language solutions to business outcomes, inclusion, and audience engagement.
Aki is actively involved in the GALA community, including the Interpreting SIG, where she contributes to conversations around AI interpreting quality, adoption, responsible implementation, and the evolving relationship between technology and professional interpreters.
Based in Tokyo, Japan, Alan Evans is the Asia Pacific Team Lead for the Meehan Group. His duties include translation, interpreting, project and personnel management, client management and more. Starting as an intern Alan has developed his skills first as a translator, then as an interpreter, while taking on other internal duties while working at the Meehan Group.
Silvia Granzo is the Interpreting Team Lead at Welocalize. After relocating from Italy to the UK while studying interpreting and translation, she pursued a career in interpreting management, supporting both public sector programs and large-scale global live events, offering her support both onsite and remotely.
In recent years, Silvia has focused on the adoption of AI-driven technologies to enhance accessibility in live events.
As part of her professional portfolio, she headed the Technology Program at Women in Localization and she currently collaborates closely with GALA’s Interpreting SIG.
Tomasz Korybski is Assistant Professor at the Institute of Applied Linguistics, University of Warsaw, and freelance conference interpreter with 20+ years of experience. His current research focuses on evaluation and benchmarking of interpreting quality (human and MI) as well as technology-assisted interpreting.
