ROME, MARCH 7, 2024 - Translated, a leading provider of AI-powered language solutions, today announced that its research center, Imminent, is once again offering €100,000 in grants to fund five original research projects that explore the most advanced frontiers in the world of language services. The call is open to startup founders, researchers, innovators, authors, university labs, organizations, and companies worldwide.

Imminent will award five €20,000 grants in the following areas:

  • Language Economics
  • Linguistic Data
  • Machine Learning Algorithms for Translation
  • Human-Computer Interaction
  • Neuroscience of language.

Imminent was established to foster research and innovation in the field of language, with the goal of promoting understanding in our multicultural and multilingual world. The project supports Translated's mission to advance mutual understanding through language.

In the past two years, Imminent has funded many cutting-edge projects, including one focused on collecting 50 hours of speech data in a crowdsourced version for the Yorùbá language (spoken by 45 million people in Central Africa), another investigating the impact of error detection methods on post-editing performance in real-world settings, and a neuroscientific proposal to characterize the spatio-temporal features of interhemispheric interactions between the left and right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in bilingual healthy adults.

A tangible outcome of past grants has been an entirely new T-Index, updated to identify emerging markets and opportunities, thus predicting which languages will become more relevant in the future for a given product in a given country.

Commenting on the announcement, Sébastien Bratières, Director of AI at Translated and a member of the grant evaluation committee, said: "Imminent offers itself as a catalyst to drive innovative solutions in the language space. We look forward to continuing to support groundbreaking projects that have the potential to shape the future of language understanding and communication."

The deadline for project submissions is March 31.
