Software Testing and Quality Assurance

The quality assurance professional's role is to ensure that any localized product—be it a website, a game, a computer program or marketing materials—works as well in the target language as it does in the source language. They check to be sure standards and specific requirements are met and they oversee the testing process. Working in the localization and language industry, quality assurance professionals understand different testing tools and methodologies.

Attention to detail and precision are a must for a quality assurance professional.

Software testing. Responsible for technical features, these specialists run software builds and record bugs in bug trackers, including problems with internationalization, incorrect currencies, country standards, etc. They often rely on automatic testing software to see how the app performs across multiple platforms and devices.

Linguistic testing. Language testers focus on the linguistic component of the software and check work received from vendors. They often work as revisers and use automatic QA tools to detect errors, flag them, and calculate quality scores, or determine if the work should be re-routed back to the language provider.

Software Funcational Testers Responsibilities

  • Plan, develop, execute tests for software releases
  • Automate tests
  • Troubleshoot issues and identify the root cause
  • Work with developers, product managers and project managers to quickly resolve defects
  • Participate in the project requirements definition

Software Tester Requirements

  • At least 2 years’ experience with software quality assurance and testing methodologies
  • Experience in Automated Testing
  • Good knowledge of C#, HTML, JavaScript/jQuery, ASP.NET
  • Exceptional logic and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team

Linguistic Quality Assurance Specialists Responsibilities

  • Ensure translation quality
  • Perform final check on finished translations
  • Run automated QA checks and draw conclusions from their reports
  • Cross-reference QA findings across multiple languages
  • Provide vendor managers with quality control support
  • Evaluate project specifications and formulate risk-appropriate QA strategy, including resource selection and implementation of quality control steps
  • Build up vocabulary and terminology databases, glossaries, and manage the reference resources
  • Identify, monitor and record irregularities in translation quality

Linguistic Quality Assurance Specialists Responsibilities

  • Native or near-native fluency in English and at least one other commercially significant language
  • Bachelor's degree in translation or a related field
  • Work experience in professional translations
  • Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Team-player attitude; must be able to successfully balance shifting priorities and meet deadlines
  • Good working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and macros
  • Familiarity with CAT tools, DTP, and QA tools
  • Ability to make efficient in-process decisions based on knowledge, experience, and expert input
