Multivac Centralizes Translation Management Using Across Language Server

LOS ANGELES & KARLSBAD, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Multivac Sepp Haggenmüller GmbH & Co. KG, manufacturer of packaging solutions used in over 100 countries worldwide, is reporting results of its deployment of the Across Language Server for commissioning and managing its translation projects. Translation projects for 31 languages are now directly managed from the headquarters in Wolfertschwenden, Germany, with many in-house and external resources included in the translation process.

Multivac made a decision to translate documentation into more than the 25 EU languages required by the EC Machinery Directive. With this decision, the translation volume at the supplier of deep-draw packaging machines and full-service provider of packaging solutions for food and non-food products immediately rose by a multiple factor, from its original 11 languages served to 31. Around the same time, the number of technical documents needing to be prepared also rose by about 20%.

Needing greater flexibility and transparency of translation projects, the editorial team decided to administer and manage their language projects in-house. Project managers chose the Across Language Server as the central platform for all language matters in the company to enable them to meet their specifications in an optimal manner. In addition, Ovidius TCToolbox, the XML-based editorial and content management system (CMS) used by Multivac, was integrated with the Across Language Server, allowing initiation of projects in the CMS.
Reinhard Lankes, head of Technical Documentation at Multivac, comments on the decision: "From the very beginning, the chemistry between the Across contact person and us was just right -- a decisive factor for being able to carry out our ambitious project successfully."

Managing projects in-house allows the company to keep the language data -- the entries in the translation memory and in the terminology database -- in-house, so they can be used during the creation of the source text. It also allows re-use of sections of existing translations, keeping costs down.
The direct link between the Language Server and the editorial and content management system ensures seamless data exchange. The CMS forwards the content to be translated directly to the Across Language Server. All multilingual content creation processes are therefore tracked in a consistent manner, from the creation of the modular source text to the translation.

Central project management gives the editorial team a simultaneous overview of the progress and processing status, allowing it to intervene and guide the process as necessary. Reinhard Lankes cites another advantage of this approach: "Because project management is now integrated in our company, we are in a position to identify even hidden potentials for improvement, lowering translation costs significantly."
