Juan José Arevalillo Doval Appointed Chairman of the Spanish Translation Companies Association (ACT)
MADRID. At the last General Assembly of the ACT (Spanish Translation Companies Association), Juan José Arevalillo Doval, the managing director of Hermes Traducciones y Servicios Lingüísticos, S.L., was unanimously elected to chair the association from January 1, 2005 to December 31, 2006.
Juan José Arevalillo summarised his reaction as follows: "My appointment as chairman of the ACT has given me great personal satisfaction, but it is also an enormous responsibility, since it involves uniting the efforts of numerous Spanish translation companies with a firm commitment to quality and supporting a dignified industry in Spain. With this in mind, and among other initiatives, the ACT will shortly be publishing the first broad-based market study on the translation industry in Spain, continue to chair the meetings of the European Committee preparing the future European quality standard for translation services, gain further visibility for the Association’s activities and goals, and attempt to strengthen its links with other professional translation associations, both in Spain and elsewhere".
Information about the ACT
Established in 1990, the ACT is a Spanish business association. It is also a founder member of the European Union of Associations of Translation Companies, created in Sardinia (Italy) in 1994. Its main activities include promoting its members, organising congresses, sharing information on a national and international scale, relations with freelance translators and translators’ associations, relations with the administration, the defence of both members and customers, obtaining greater acknowledgement for the profession and the development of quality standards applicable to the translation field. With regards to the latter, the association has been playing a leading role in the preparation of the future EN-15038 European quality standard for translation services, as part of AENOR (the Spanish Standardisation Association) and the CEN (European Committee for Standardisation). The standard is scheduled for publication in 2006 and will supersede all existing quality standards applicable to translation in Europe.
