ENLASO (translate.com) Supports Development of Cross-Platform Okapi Localization Framework
New Framework is Written in Java and now Runs on Windows, Linux, and Macintosh Platforms
Boulder, CO (April 30, 2009) – ENLASO Corporation, a leading provider of translation and localization solutions, announced today that two of its developers have been dedicated to the design and development of the new Okapi Framework localization product.
The Okapi Framework is an open source project offering sets of libraries, as well as components and tools that assist translation and localization-related pre- and post-processing tasks. The project was initially developed by ENLASO for the Windows platform and has now been re-written in Java for cross-platform use. The previous .NET-based implementation of the Okapi Framework is still available for download and many of its components—including Olifant—will be maintained until an equivalent application is available in the new cross-platform Framework.
"With new development paradigms emerging—such as Eclipse—and with the growing importance of non-Windows platforms, we felt a need to widen the scope of the Okapi Framework to allow more interoperability,” notes Yves Savourel, ENLASO’s Solutions Architect. He continues, “Moving to Java and to a cross-platform environment allows a more efficient integration with other open source projects. It has also made possible for developers from various horizons to join the new project.”
Fredrik Liden, an ENLASO software engineer and project participant, adds, "This first milestone is only a beginning since we are already planning more applications and components.”
Some interesting new aspects of the Framework are its resource model for extracted data and its event-driven pipeline mechanism. Such features allow anyone to re-use the Okapi components to create flexible, customized solutions.
The cross-platform packages of the new Okapi Framework can be downloaded for free at http://okapi.opentag.com/.
