The Globalization and Localization Association (GALA) has announced a new video contest for students in European Commission accredited European Masters in Translation (EMT) graduate programs to show the world what they know about the language services industry.

Students who submit an original 45-second video on the theme, “Translation bridges continents, markets, and cultures,” by 10 January 2014 will be entered to win one of two free passes to GALA’s Language of Business conference in Istanbul in March 2014.  Submissions will be judged on Facebook by GALA’s community of language industry professionals.

"It is very important that students get a feel for the professional side of the translation industry, along with the challenges and opportunities it entails,” commented Inkaliisa Vihonen, the European Commission Directorate General for Translation who coordinates the EMT Network. “Industry events like GALA’s offer a valuable experience in this sense and also an opportunity to meet future employers."

GALA’s Language of Business conference is the premier event in the language industry. The free passes awarded to the winners are intended jumpstart their new careers in translation by providing them opportunities to network with industry leaders and participate in high-energy discussions. Students will capitalize on the collective experience, expertise, and enthusiasm of their future industry peers.

EMT Star is part of GALA’s EMT initiative under their Collaborative Research, Innovation and Standards Program (CRISP). “GALA wants this contest to raise the profile of the translation profession and to promote the employability of EMT graduates and the EMT program in general,” said GALA CEO Hans Fenstermacher of the contest.  “We want to help connect emerging professionals with the people and resources they need to be successful in this increasingly important field.”
