Across v5 Offers Platform for Enterprise Language Intelligence

Across Systems GmbH

Tuesday, 12 May, 2009

LOS ANGELES - With its product generation v5, Across Systems heralds the start of a new era for multilingual product and corporate communications. Under the heading "Enterprise Language Intelligence," Across is deploying the concepts of Business Intelligence for usage in multi-language documents and content. With Across v5, companies operating at an international level gain greater control of their valuable language resources and of the management of complex translation processes despite widespread outsourcing of translation projects.

The new Across Language Server v5 offers several powerful options for process automation as well as for workflow management and analysis:

  • crossAnalytics is a new component that identifies key data and reveals previously untapped process optimization potential
  • Web-based project management is an option for managing complex translation processes without any client installation
  • crossMining introduces principles of data and text mining into language technology
  • crossAuthor Linguistic expands authoring support using rule-based quality assurance methods, and
  • crossAutomate, another new module, allows for free configuration and automation of processes.

With the new product generation v5, the platform architecture of Across, which is based on open interfaces for end-to-end processes, has also been advanced. The number of available connections for interacting systems has expanded to approximately 50, including interfaces to SAP ERP, BPM tool Plunet, Web CMS Typo 3 and the ECM solution of Optimal Systems, among others.

The first showcase of Across v5 will take place at the Localization World Conference in Berlin on June 8-10, 2009.

Exploiting Full Potential of Language Resources
Following the principles of text and data mining, centrally stored foreign-language versions of various types of content, including product catalogs, operating manuals and web sites, can be re-used with maximum efficiency. This applies not only when individual text segments are repeated completely or partially, but also when text building blocks from existing texts are combined in a new way. Compared to conventional translation memory technologies, this approach significantly reduces translation workload and costs, and increases the quality and consistency of target texts at the same time.

The terminology system of Across v5 introduces so called “instances,” which enable finely differentiated, company-wide access to specialized and corporate terminology along with central data management. In addition to group-wide terminology, unique vocabularies of individual group brands can be handled and used separately, and the use of digital specialized dictionaries can be seamlessly integrated.

In order to profitably use language resources not only for translations but also for creating source text, the authoring assistance crossAuthor feature has been expanded to use rule-based quality assurance methods. This allows technical writers to create translation-oriented source texts that systematically comply with style rules.

Full Control of Processes and Workflows
With technologies for easy collaboration of all those involved in the translation process, Across has developed into the leading independent technology vendor. External language service providers, for example, can be directly linked by means of a server-to-server connection while web-based language portals enable structured commissioning of translations within a company. With Language Server v5, Across also introduces web-based management of any kind of translation project, thereby bridging the last gap in the options to use Across via a web browser.

The new module, crossAutomate, allows for freely configurable automation of processes, thus enabling Across customers to maximally profit from seamless workflows and increased integration. Possible applications range from automatic commissioning of defined service providers depending on text type and target language to simple notification if a deadline is exceeded.

Another new component, crossAnalytics, also provides more transparency. It analyzes all language- and translation-related processes and provides informative key data and analyses. In this manner, companies can identify, for example, text reuse rates or costs and translation throughput for individual languages.

"Despite challenging economic times, the number of target languages and complexity of content keep growing. Even medium-sized companies spend six- and seven-figure sums for translations. Our technology helps to significantly reduce these costs," explains Across CEO Niko Henschen. "Across enables companies to implement smooth processes with maximum efficiency and remain in charge of the process despite outsourcing. This is important not only for cost reasons, but also with respect to integrity and security of often confidential data. The product generation v5 sets new benchmarks for translation management in globally operating companies and will further speed the growth of Across Systems worldwide."
