Wednesday, 18 March, 2009

GLENDALE, Calif. and KARLSBAD, Germany (Mar. 18, 2009) – The second Across Systems User Conference, held at the Hilton Hotel in Cologne, Germany, this past week had more than 240 participants, making it the largest user conference of its type in the language technology field. It was characterized by an intensive dialogue and opinion exchange among Across customers, which provided insights into current projects. In addition to new developments coming soon in the highly anticipated version 5 of the Across Language Server, the agenda featured integration examples highlighting the open platform architecture of the Language Server. An advisory board of corporate customers was formed on the eve of the conference.

"Although only in its second year, the Across User Conference has already become an institution with strong attendance," says Niko Henschen, CEO of Across Systems. "Despite tight travel budgets, more than 240 participants followed the invitation to Cologne, making ours the biggest user conference in the field of language technology. But more important, it has become an open forum where users can share insights and opportunities."

Several customers presented case studies. René Petri, director of Technical Services at Nero AG, reported on cost savings of 55 percent totaling $1.042 million (0.8 million Euros) yearly that the software manufacturer achieves by using the Across Language Server and optimized processes. Gerald Salisbury of SMA Solar Technology focused on the improved process control experienced by SMA as a result of using the Across Language Server as a centralized platform for language resources and translation processes.

The afternoon agenda featured integration capabilities of Language Server with compatible technologies as well as a number of practice-related workshops. They highlighted the open architecture of the Language Server platform, which supports easy interfaces to other applications, such as SAP as an ERP solution or to TYPO3 as a web content management system.

Combined with the presentations and project reports, the opportunity for an intensive dialogue with other participants at the Across User Conference pleased attendees. Even the prelude event on the eve of the conference offered numerous possibilities for an interchange of experiences; "topic tables" made it easier for users with similar needs to meet each other.

Participants Feedback
Professor Dr. Johann Haller, director of IAI, the Institute for Applied Information Science at Saarland University, says, "The user conference offered us plenty of new and useful information regarding the Across Language Server. We had a wonderful opportunity to establish numerous new contacts and were particularly delighted to realize the growing significance of source text creation, a topic that plays a decisive role in the quality of the subsequent translation."

Jürgen Sapara, head of Technical Documentation Department at SMA Solar Technology AG agreed, saying,"Concrete solutions appear only when people share, discuss and develop ideas. The Across User Conference seemed perfect for this kind of opinion and idea exchange."
