Five years ago, at the GALA Conference in Prague, it was debated whether MT was a viable alternative to human translation. That question may be answered for many, but there are still some grappling with the decision to embrace the technology or not. This class will focus on the bigger picture surrounding machine translation. It will be centered on decision-making and will explore such questions as: the competition is using MT, can I afford not to use it? How do I decide if MT is worth my time and money? What technology options are available for my company? Which types of MT are best in which situations? What are the biggest pitfalls when moving to MT and what can I do to avoid them? We’ll discuss “tops and flops” in several case studies, and take a closer look at the cost calculations of adding MT as a production tool.
