“Whether you work in a home office or abroad, business success in our ever more globalized and virtualized world requires skills to navigate through cultural differences and decode cultures foreign to our own.” (Erin Meyer, The Cultural Map, 2014).

In 2011, ZF Friedrichshafen AG set out to implement a new IT Project Management Services Organization (PMO+) among its regional offices in South America, Asia Pacific, and North America. They soon found that cultural differences would not allow them to use the same roadmap twice. Melanie Scherer presents the company’s case study and the underlying framework of her analysis using Erin Meyer’s cultural clusters, including suggestions for how to bridge cultural gaps in practice.
