Rising Star Scholarship 2022

GALA is delighted to award two Rising Star Scholarships to attend our GALA 2022 San Diego conference: one for students and one for academic faculty at translation, localization, linguistic, and interpreting programs around the world. Each scholarship includes a full conference registration, a ticket to the GALA dinner, travel to and from San Diego, 3 nights in the conference hotel, and a daily per diem!

Attending GALA's conference is a great opportunity for faculty and students to learn about important trends and business strategies from language industry thought-leaders and to build connections with industry professionals. The winners will be honored during the conference and the video submissions will be published on GALA's platforms. The conference will be hybrid (virtual and in-person in San Diego); if the winner is unable to attend in-person, they may elect to attend virtually.

This year's conference theme is Back to Business. After much of the world's workforce went remote, professionals had to adapt and become proficient in presenting via video. Our industry grew as multimedia localization boomed. This year, to apply for the scholarship, you will need to create an original video responding to one of the prompts below.

Your submission should include:
  • A video responding to one of the prompts below for students or the single prompt for faculty. Be creative! Pick a style and format that you feel comfortable working in, such as a lecture, a presentation with voice over, graphics, charts, animation, etc. The video should be 2-5 minutes in length (this is a strict limit).
  • A brief abstract of the content (250 words max).
  • The video and brief should be in English (submissions will not be scored on English language proficiency).
  • Do not use identifying information in the video or written abstract (this includes name and university); the scholarship committee reviews the submissions anonymously.
  • A CV.
  • Students must include proof of current enrollment or recent graduation within the past year. This could be one of the following: an unofficial transcript, signed note from university staff on official letterhead, or a picture of your diploma/certificate.
  • Faculty must include proof of current employment, such as a signed note from university staff on official letterhead.

Deadline to submit: 19 January 2022 at 12:00 pm PST

Thank you to the 2022 Rising Star Scholarship Committee: Oleksandr Bondarenko (Translatel), María del Mar Sánchez Ramos (Universidad de Alcalá), Vicenta Ten Soriano (RWS), and Patrick Nunes (Rotary International). The committee is managed by Alicia Deadrick (GALA).

  • What translation technologies do you consider as the “near future”?
  • What is one strategy you recommend language service companies and internal departments need to be impactful in the coming years?
