GALA Connect Group Types
GALA Connect offers four different varieties of groups to accommodate for different community needs:
- Open Access Groups
- GALA Members Only Groups
- Special Access GALA Members Groups
- Private Groups
Please review the chart below to determine which group type is most suitable for your purposes. Only GALA members are eligible to start groups.
|Group Type||Group Visibility||Eligible Participants||Suggested Uses|
|Open Access Group||Anyone who visits the Connect website can see that this group exists.||Any authenticated user can join. There is no approval needed.||This is the most open type of group. Engage with the broader language industry on a wide range of topics and initiatives. (Ex: Regional groupings, education initiatives, and standards discussions.)|
|GALA Members Group||Anyone who visits the Connect website can see that this group exists.||Any active GALA member can join these groups. There is no approval needed.||This group type is slightly more restricted than Open Access groups as the postings are only visible to GALA members. (Ex: Role-based and topic-based discussions.)|
|Special Access GALA Members Group||Anyone who visits the Connect website can see that this group exists.||GALA members may request to join. Approval by the moderator is needed.||This group type is a good place to start conversations for a specific job function or organization type. (Ex: Client-only or Vendor-only groups.)|
|Private Group||Private groups are only visible to users who have been invited to join. There is no option for ‘uninvited guests’ to see that the group is available or request access.||The group moderator must invite others to join. Users must accept the invitation to join.||This is our most restricted group type. It can be used for things like program committees, special task forces, or even private groups of members wishing to collaborate. (Ex: Special projects.)|
Also take into account that you can also start a discussion thread in the Connect Forum. Discussions are open to all users with a website account. Discussions are a great place for quick conversations and topics that will have a shorter life-span.
