Pre/Post Conference Tours
GALA has organized two tours: one on Sunday, 26 March and one on Thursday, 30 March. You will be able to register for either or both tours when you register for the conference. Guests are welcomed (payment required) and must be added by contacting GALA staff directly. Please let us know if you'd like to register a friend or family member and we'll help. Tour guides will speak English and tours will depart from the conference hotel.
Pre- and post-conference tours are not only a great way to see the highlights of the host city — they are also a great way to network with other conference participants.
Sunday, 26 March
Canal and Walking Tour of Amsterdam
The group will meet in the reception area of the Okura Hotel. Guests will board a luxury saloon boat at the Okura Hotel dock and tour along Amsterdam's oldest canals: the Golden Bend, Meagre Bridge, Hermitage, and more. During the tour, the guide will discuss the history, trade, and architecture of Amsterdam.
At approximately 11:30 you will meet two art historian guides at the entrance of NH Barbizon Palace Hotel and continue on a walking tour along Chinatown, Nieuwmarkt, medieval Waag, Rembrandt House, Rembrandt Square, flower market, Spui to Kloveniersburgwal, Staalstraat.
Guests will enjoy lunch at Hotel Droog and visit the shop of the famous Droog Design, later continuing the walking tour along Oude Waal, Schreierstoren to the Zeedijk. Around 15:00, guests will enjoy a tasting of three jenevers or liquors at the historical tasting room before concluding the tour at 16:00.
Cost: US$ 125 + 21% VAT. Lunch and drinks tasting are included.
Thursday, 30 March
Bike Tour to the Rijksmuseum
The group will meet the art historian guide at the Okura Hotel to get instructions and bikes. After arriving at the Rijksmuseum you'll meet with a second guide and tour the highlights of the Rijksmuseum with special focus on Rembrandt, Vermeer, Ruysdael, and Jan Steen.
The bike tour will continue to the Jordaan along Westerkerk and the Anne Frank House with a stop for apple pie and coffee at Winkel cafe. The tour will continue along Noorderkerk, courtyards, churches, small shops, galleries and typical Jordanese cafes. The much-praised Amsterdam Jordaan can certainly be classed as the most versatile neighborhood in the Netherlands, absolutely bursting with atmosphere.
Next, you'll continue by bike to the trendy Oosterdok area, along the riverside of the Central Station. Guests will visit the public library with a beautiful view from the roof terrace, near the Naval History Museum. Around 14:30, guests will stop for a cheese tasting at Pension Homeland, located at the former marine land of the Dutch navy, with a beautiful river view and the VOC Ship Amsterdam.
Finally you will bike back along the Plantage, Weesperzijde and Carré to Hotel Okura where you will finish your tour at approximately 16:00
Cost: US$ 125 + 21% VAT. Bike, insurance, Rijksmuseum entrance, apple pie and coffee, plus cheese tasting included. Please note that the weather in Amsterdam in March can be cool and wet! Please dress accordingly.
