A New Challenge for 2016!

By: Klaus Fleischmann, Managing Director - Kaleidoscope GmbH

14 January 2016

As most of you have found out already, a few weeks ago, I have been elected into the Board of Directors of the Globalization and Localization Association, also known as GALA. First and foremost, thank for your trust to all of you who voted for me!

As a board member of the world´s leading trade association for the language industry, I will have the privilege to take an active part in shaping our industry´s future and to increase the insight of “industry outsiders” into our businesses and processes.

Our Industry

Among my credos is that we work in a very “cool and sexy” industry. We deal with cutting edge information and content on a global scale, and we enable global communication – what a responsibility and what an awesome challenge! We need to better convey to newcomers and outsiders what an exciting part the language business plays in the world!

At the same time, our industry is extremely knowledge-intensive, high-tech and professional, with enormous IT requirements and a supply chain which is by definition global, no matter how small the project. However, industry outsiders still have astonishing misconceptions of what translation and localization really is, how to define the quality of our output, and why it is a very specialized business worth paying for. Here, too, we can offer insights, establish best practices for our industry and our clients and create transparency.

My Goals with GALA

“Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe,” said Abraham Lincoln. In our case, the axe is knowledge, networks, professionalism, and technology.

GALA plays a prime role in providing knowledge, enabling networking, and encouraging professionalism among its members, but also for the language business at large. The new GALA Connect platform, which is currently being launched, will not only provide a valuable platform for networking and sharing best practices. It will also become a prime source of relevant industry information, which can benefit us all.

Those who know me also know that technology is my personal driver, so of course I will try to bring my knowledge, ideas, and practical assistance to GALA when it comes to technology. We live in exciting technological times, when we look at trends as opposite as machine translation or transcreation, collaboration or workflow automation, strong standards, but also disruptive new technologies. As GALA, we cannot only stay on top of these developments, but we can have a significant influence on them to advance them in meaningful and constructive ways.

All these initiatives and the continuous hard work of the GALA staff have put GALA in a pole position for our industry. By reaching out more openly to the buyers’ side, we can advance this position even more. And trying to do exactly that is my agenda for my 2 years term as a member of the board at GALA.

New York Panorama

See you in New York!

Please get in touch! I would love to see your comments, inputs, or ideas. I will of course be present at the Annual Conference in New York, feel free to speak to me. And once the GALA Connect platform is online, we will have a perfect spot to engage, discuss, and work for our industry! I am looking forward to it!

Wishing everybody an exciting and successful 2016!
