META-FORUM 2012: fostering innovation in language technology
The slogan of this year's annual meeting of the META-NET Network of Excellence was "A Strategy for Multilingual Europe". META-FORUM 2012 took place on June 20 and 21 in Brussels, Belgium. Thibaut Kleiner (Member of Cabinet of the Commissioner for the Digital Agenda, Neelie Kroes) and Prof. Hans Uszkoreit (Coordinator of META-NET and Scientific Director at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence) stressed in their opening speeches that two ingredients need to be firmly in place - a strong community around language and language technologies that have a clear research strategy and a very close relationship to different industries in order to foster innovation and further success stories of Language Technology "Made in Europe." In the two days of META-FORUM, sessions on a wide range of topics such as "Europe and its Languages," "Industry and Innovation," and "Plans for Research and Innovation in the Member State and Regions" showed that the Multilingual Technology Alliance (META) is well positioned and covers all important aspects either on its own or through many of its strategic partnerships.
At META Forum, GALA Standards Director Serge Gladkoff presented on behalf of GALA, spotlighting our European membership's collective expertise in the domain of development and use of language technology. This presentation, “META strive: Making a paradise garden out of the jungles” highlights accomplishments from member companies and demonstrates their innovative approaches to language technology.
