Demystifying the Global Internet Network and All Things Technology at think! Interpreting

By Katharine Allen and Barry S. Olsen, Co-Presidents of InterpretAmerica

In less than a week in Istanbul, Turkey, InterpretAmerica and GALA will launch think! Interpreting, the result of a year-long collaboration to bring you the first-ever interpreting programming channel at GALA’s 2014 Business of Language conference. We have a full slate of speakers, vendor demos, and Knowledgefest table topics to help demystify the interpreting side of the language industry, and especially current and emerging technology trends.

Just as the advent of the Internet sparked major disruption and transformation in translation and localization, so now is the rapid spread of mobile technologies impacting the interpreting side of the industry. Technologies that allow individuals to carry in their hands the equivalent of mini-onboard computers with full audio and often visual connectivity have wiped out geographic barriers to verbal communication, just as the internet did for written communications. The only true barrier left for both written and verbal interaction between people is language. And increasingly, clients seeking to overcome that barrier care little as to whether the solution to their problem is called “translation” or “interpreting.”

Out of this demand was born “think! Interpreting.” Both sides of the language industry are eager to find cutting-edge solutions to the exploding demand for language services of all kinds. Our think! Interpreting speaker and event lineup is targeted specifically for GALA attendees and presented by innovative and knowledgeable experts in the field.  Some “not-to-be-found-elsewhere” highlights include:

  • Global Internet Connectivity: It is with great excitement that we bring Hervey Allen of the Network Startup Resource Center to the stage. We can say without exaggeration that few people on the planet have as much up close and personal experience laying down Internet connectivity on every continent, while at the same time working with the likes of Google to help build the world’s internet framework. This is a not-to-be-missed session for any businessperson looking to provide multilingual services in expanding and existing markets.
  • Cutting-Edge Technology to Deliver Interpreting Services: Monday’s afternoon session will show how the big picture outlined in the morning is playing out through the efforts of three very innovative providers pushing the boundaries to improve real-time interpreting over video and audio networks worldwide. Whether it’s the effort of Interpreters On Call to make interpreters available 24/7 wherever you go, or Babelverse’s work through apps and social networking principles to bring on-demand interpreting available remotely on any device, or ZipDX’s model to take conference call platforms to the next level by making quality simultaneous interpreting available for virtual meetings, these presentations represent the cutting-edge of the blend between human-powered verbal communication and brand new technologies.
  • Knowledgefest: Our Knowledge tables will continue the great discussion begun by all our presenters. One will encourage GALA attendees to share their own experiences with Technology and Interpreting, facilitated by two interpreting industry veterans, Kathleen Diamond, former CEO of Language Learning Enterprises, and Kristan Quinlan, CEO of Certified Languages International. The second table will focus on the many hybrid communication pathways now ubiquitous in every day communication, such as live chat services, texting, and real-time subtitling and emailing. The very real question and often conundrum that faces language service providers is: Do you need interpreting or translation for that?

These are just a few of the highlights for the think! Interpreting programming channel at GALA 2014. Be sure to check out all our sessions on the think! Interpreting page and plan to make contact with these dynamic players in our field.
