Tunde Adegbola

Tunde Adegbola

   Executive Director, African Languages Technology Initiative

Tunde Adegbola is a research scientist, consulting engineer and culture activist with wide ranging experience in information and communication media systems as well as Human Language Technology. He holds a B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Lagos, M.Sc. in Computer Science from the University of Wales and a Ph.D. in Information Science from the University of Ibadan. As Executive Director of African Languages Technology Initiative (Alt-i), he leads a team of research Engineers, Computer Scientists, Linguists and Information Scientists in adapting Human Language Technologies for African languages.

 
Emre Akkas

Emre Akkas

   Chief Localizer, Globalme Localization Inc.

Emre Akkas developed his passion for localization 10 years ago when he volunteered to develop a multilingual website for a community college. He then continued to develop his career in the language industry as a Turkish QA tester for major localization and software companies, and finally at Intel’s in-house localization team as a Quality Assurance Lead and Localization Engineer. Being on many different sides of the equation gave him a solid understanding and mastery in localization best practices. In 2009 he co-founded Globalme Localization Inc., where he oversees technical operations and leads the research and development efforts to increase efficiency in localization processes.

Laurène Ballet joined WhP in 2005 after a Master's degree in multilingual specialized translation, technologies and project management at Lille III University. She successfully managed several large accounts within the company. Laurène naturally turned to Vendor Management as a continuity of her work as Project Manager.

 
Wayne Bourland

Wayne Bourland

   Director, Global Localization Team, Dell

Wayne Bourland is recognized in both the content management and localization industries as an agent for change, driving innovation and process efficiencies across global organizations. After a decade-long career in the US Army, he joined Dell, starting as a rep in the call center and quickly moving to managing call centers, launching call centers globally, and then into content management and localization. He is currently responsible for translation of Dell.com, support content, learning and development and marketing collateral for more than 80 organizations across Dell. With no background in linguistics, he approaches the industry with a different perspective, focusing on end value and customer acceptance versus traditional industry key performance indicators.

 
Andrew Bredenkamp

Andrew Bredenkamp

   CEO, Acrolinx

Dr. Andrew Bredenkamp is co-founder and CEO of Acrolinx. Andrew has over 20 years of experience in multilingual information development. Before starting Acrolinx, Andrew was Head of the Technology Transfer Centre at the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) Language Technology Lab. Andrew holds degrees in technical translation and linguistics and a Ph.D. in Computational Linguistics. He is on the advisory board of a number of organizations, including Translators without Borders and The Centre for Next Generation Localisation (CNGL).

David Canek is the founder and CEO of MemSource Technologies, a software company providing cloud translation technology. David, a graduate from Translation and Comparative Studies, received his education at Charles University, Prague, Humboldt University in Berlin and the University of Vienna. His professional experience includes business development and product management roles in the software and translation industries. David is keen on following innovation in translation technology, such as machine translation post-editing or enabling translation software for the cloud and has presented on these subjects at leading industry conferences – Localization World, Tekom, ATA and others.

 
Christopher Carter

Chris has been studying languages and linguistics since he was 12 years old. After graduating from college, studying both Linguistics and Theatre, Chris was a union Stage Manager for grand opera and theatre for several years. But then he returned to his passion, languages, and joined aLanguageBank many years ago as a Project Manager. He worked his way up to Director of Operations, and in January of 2009 Chris became the General Manager at aLanguageBank. He has also widely studied psychometrics for language testing. Chris is currently serving on the Leadership Council for the Association of Language Companies (ALC).

After studying mathematics and physics, Jörgen founded a translation company and bought his first MT system in 1990. After selling his company INTL.com in 1998, he held the position of President Enterprise Solutions and became responsible for all ERP, CRM and related companies worldwide. When INTL.com was acquired by Lionbridge, Joergen moved to the USA and was appointed Vice President Process and Technology, working out of the Waltham, MA headquarters for 2 years. After three more years acting as Managing Director of Lionbridge Germany and of Logoport GmbH and Head of Sales Continental Europe at the same time, he decided it was time to implement his own ideas regarding customer-based services again.

Rubén holds a BA in Translation from the University of Granada. He’s currently taking a Master’s degree in computational linguistics at UNED. He has been involved in the L10N industry since 2001 in various roles: translator, editor, project manager. He joined PayPal in 2008 as Spanish Language Specialist and then transferred into Machine Translation Specialist in 2011. He’s got a great passion for both languages and technology, so he feels at home in places where these two disciplines meet.

Pedro Díez-Orzas

   CEO, Linguaserve Internacionalización de Servicios S.A.

Pedro Luis Díez-Orzas, PhD in General Linguistics, specializing in Computational Linguistics (Univ. Autónoma, Madrid, 1997), is now CEO of Linguaserve I.S. S.A. and Professor at the Univ. Complutense de Madrid. He is an expert in Language Engineering & Translation, with 23 years of professional experience in R&D in language industries. Pedro developed his career at the Novell Linguistic Technology Department (Antwerp) as head of multilingual semantics; at the WordPerfect Linguistic Development Department (Antwerp) as Head of Spanish Lexicography; and as European Project Coordinator (INTERLEX MLIS-103), European Project Technical Manager (EuroWordNet LE-4001), and currently representing Linguaserve in the EU Project MLW-LT (FP7-ICT-2011-7 287815).

He has over 25 years of experience in creative technology application including executive management positions in a number of software companies.

 
Loic Dufresne de Virel

Loïc Dufresne de Virel

   Localization Strategist, Intel Corporation

In his role as localization strategist for Intel’s in-house localization team, Loïc’s main activities include overseeing the use of Intel’s translation management system and deployment of other localization tools, constantly advocating for proper and improved internationalization and localization practices and processes for web, software and “print” collateral, as well as defining the training roadmap for localization and internationalization. Prior to moving to Oregon and joining Intel, where he has been involved in localization for the past 12 years, Loïc spent a few years in Costa Rica, working as a regional technical adviser for the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development.

After graduating with a degree in computational linguistics, Harald Elsen spent his early career working at Translingua GmbH with full responsibility for QA, process optimization and the introduction of localization and translation technologies. He later moved to LOGOS Corp. as manager, technology and processes, and co-founded DELTA International CITS GmbH as a translation and post-editing service provider within LOGOS. Since DELTA International CITS GmbH became independent in 2000 Harald has been managing director of that company, which specializes in machine translation solutions and post-editing services.

Richard Estevez is the CEO and founder of Trusted Translations, Inc. Mr. Estevez is an experienced executive with over 15 years of business and legal expertise and over 25 years of experience with translations. He is regarded as one of the foremost experts on the US Hispanic and Latin American markets. Mr. Estevez also sits on various committees for charitable organizations and is the chair for a major fundraising event for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Hans is Vice President of TransPerfect / Translations.com. Born in Germany, Hans speaks six languages and holds degrees from Princeton University and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. Hans is an Associate Fellow of the Society for Technical Communication (STC) and former president of the STC Boston Chapter. In 2002 Hans co-founded the Globalization And Localization Association (GALA). In 2011, Hans was re-elected to the GALA Board for a second consecutive term.

Klaus Fleischmann

Klaus Fleischmann grew up with languages and computers in Austria and the US. He studied conference interpreting in Vienna and Monterey, California, and technical communication at Danube University Krems. In 1996, he founded Kaleidoscope GmbH as a consulting and software company for international documentation and in 2000, he co-founded the "ARGE International Documentation“ in Vienna. He presents lectures and university courses on terminology and translation management in Austria and abroad.

Serge Gladkoff graduated from a Russian ivy league nuclear physics science college and has been engaged in the localization industry for more than seventeen years, first as a deputy director for a software distribution company Dialogue-MEPhI, then as a localization manager of Borland International's Moscow office, and for the past fourteen years, as the co-founder and co-owner of the Logrus International Corporation. Since August 2006 Serge has served as Chair of the GALA Standards Committee, driving the initiative to uncover benefits for GALA members through sharing business information. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Globalization and Localization Association (GALA).

Jeff Guillem is based in the company's headquarters in Brno, Czech Republic and has overall responsibility for the company's global solutions delivery. He joined Moravia in 2011 and has over 20 years of international and specific localization industry experience. Prior to joining Moravia, he spent 12 years at Lionbridge Technologies, where he held a number of senior roles, most recently as the Country Manager in France. Prior to Lionbridge, Mr. Guillem worked at Bowne Global Solutions. Educated in several countries in Africa and in France, Mr. Guillem holds a masters in Computer Science from the University of Nice. He is fluent in English and French and functional in German.

She has been actively involved in the language industry for several years, publishing articles and speaking on a variety of industry-related topics such as trends in the language industry, quality standards, and language and the internet. Kim serves as a board member for the Globalization and Localization Association. She has served on conference program committees for a number of industry events including Localization World Berlin, LISA Paris, Networking Days Paris and Lisbon, and GALA 2009 and 2010. A native of Toronto, Canada, Kim studied French and German at the University of Toronto.

Earlier, Muddyman spent 16 years working for London-based HSBC Asset Finance U.K. Ltd., one of the largest banking and financial services organizations in the world. Muddyman received his master's degree in business administration from Warwick University and is also currently actively involved in a number of not for profit organizations.

Prior to Petras Associates, she was a Vice President at Ketchum Worldwide, an international public relations firm.

Jessica Rathke has 20 years of experience localization sales, sales management and marketing in the United States and Europe for leading LSPs. She is currently MD at Localisation Sales & Marketing, a London-based sales and marketing consultancy that provides strategic and tactical sales and marketing services to help LSPs differentiate themselves, improve sales efficiency and increase revenue. Prior to her career in localization, Jessica held executive sales and marketing positions with international technology companies. Jessica holds an MBA and degrees in Foreign Affairs and German from Miami University in Ohio. She also did post-graduate studies in German at the University of Salzburg.

William Rivers

Dr. Rivers has 20 years of research, development, policy and program evaluation, and management experience in culture and language for economic and national development. He chairs ASTM Main Committee F43, “Language Services and Products,” which works to develop industry standards for the $15b US language industry. Prior to ITS, he was a founding member of the Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL) at the University of Maryland, where he led research in linguistic and cultural variation. Dr. Rivers conducted field work in Kazakhstan and speaks Russian and French. He received his PhD in Russian from Bryn Mawr College.

Chris joined TextMinded Danmark (then EICOM) in 2006 after receiving his Ph.D. in the law. In his role as key account manager, he has been instrumental in growing an already well-established account into the agency’s largest and most dynamic. Chris is also the manager of the agency’s copywriting department and is actively working on incorporating authoring tools into the localization workflow to help make the dream of “copy for translation” a reality for all of TextMinded’s customers.

 
Reinhard Schaler

Reinhard Schäler has been involved in the localization industry in a variety of roles since 1987. He has attracted more than €5.5m euro in research funding and has published more than 50 articles, book chapters and conference papers on language technologies and localization. He has been an invited speaker at EU and international government-organized conferences in Africa, the Middle East, South America and Asia. He is a Principal Investigator in the Centre for Next Generation Localisation (CNGL), a lecturer at the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems (CSIS), University of Limerick, and the founder and director of the Localisation Research Centre (LRC) at UL, established in 1995. In 2009, he established The Rosetta Foundation.

Mr. Schriver is the founder and CEO of GLOBO, a full-service global language and cultural communications service provider, with a specialization in global marketing, social media, transcreation, and on-demand interpreting and translation services. Prior to founding GLOBO, Mr. Schriver led the growth of a small family company into one of the world’s largest telephone interpreting providers. His experience includes working with business and government in the U.S. and throughout the EU, and he regularly speaks around the globe, evangelizing innovation in language services and technology. Mr. Schriver received his B.A., cum laude, in Economics from Temple University, and his Juris Doctor from The Villanova University School of Law.

After being awarded the degree of Qualified Technical Translator from Flensburg's University of Applied Sciences in 1996, Ingo mainly worked in the field of classical software localization and distinguished himself as an excellent translator for Microsoft projects. However, his skills are not limited to software. He also effectively worked with customers from the automotive, life sciences and print business sector. Today, Ingo oversees projects from customers like Oracle and Xerox. While relaxing with his family is a top priority, his three daughters also provide the necessary stress training to prepare him for anything that comes his way.

   Lecturer, University of Sheffield

Lucia Specia is a lecturer in the Department of Computer Science, University of Sheffield, UK. She is part of the Natural Language Processing group. In the past, she has worked as a lecturer at the University of Wolverhampton, and as a research engineer at Xerox Research, France. She received a PhD from the University of São Paulo, Brazil, in 2007. Her research interest is Statistical Machine Translation, and in particular Quality Assessment and Estimation for Machine Translation.

Dr. Jiri Stejskal, founder and president of CETRA Language Solutions, has more than 20 years of experience as a translator, and has also taught undergraduate and graduate language courses at the University of Pennsylvania since 1990. Jiri is a past President of the American Translators Association and he currently serves as Vice President of the International Federation of Translators and Treasurer of the American Foundation for Translation and Interpretation.

Mark Tapling joined SDL in 2010. Prior to his role at SDL he was CEO at SDL Language Weaver, leading that company through its successful acquisition by SDL. His background includes over 20 years of experience in strategy, growth, financial and operational management of technology companies. Mark has served as the CEO and director of both public and private firms, through all stages of company growth. Mark received his BS in Economics and Management from Michigan State University.

Lori Thicke is co-founder and CEO of Lexcelera (Eurotexte Group). Established in Paris in 1986, Lexcelera was the first localization company in France to receive ISO 9001: 2000 quality certification. Today, Lexcelera is an innovator in translation technology. In 1993, Lori and her partner, Ros Smith-Thomas, founded Traducteurs sans Frontières to provide free translation to humanitarian organizations. Today Translators without Borders and Traducteurs sans Frontières are making a significant contribution to spreading knowledge around the world. Lori, who holds an MFA from the University of British Columbia, is a frequent speaker on bridging the gap in the knowledge divide to fight information poverty.

 
Demid Tishin

Demid Tishin

   Director General, All Correct Language Solutions

Demid Tishin is co-owner of All Correct Language Solutions LLC, Russian delegate to ISO workgroup on translation and interpreting standards (TC37), co-founder of Translation Forum Russia (www.tconf.com), and management consultant. Since 2007 he has researched translation quality assessment, and in 2010 developed a vendor competence assessment system based on marking translation errors in samples. Demid is a frequent speaker at localization industry events in Russia and abroad, including ProZ.com conferences and LISA Forum Europe.

 
Hans Uszkoreit

Hans Uszkoreit

   Scientific Director, DFKI

Hans is a computational linguist in Saarbrücken and Berlin, Germany, working as Professor and Department Chair at Saarland University and as Scientific Director at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI). He studied linguistics and computer science at TU Berlin and UT Austin. In 1994 he received his PhD in linguistics from the University of Texas while already working as a computer scientist for SRI International in Menlo Park, California. Hans is coordinating the European Network of Excellence META-NET, the European machine translation project EuroMatrix and the International Erasmus Mundus Masters Programme LCT. He is co-founder of the DFKI language technology spin-off companies Acrolinx and Yocoy in Berlin.

 
Anita Wilson

Anita Wilson

   Head of Operations, eurocom Translation Services GmbH

Anita Wilson studied English and Communication Studies in Salzburg, Austria and Belfast, Northern Ireland. Following the completion of her degree, she gained several years of work experience in project and people management in the UK and Austria. She joined eurocom Translation Services in Vienna in 2009 where she holds the position of Head of Operations.

 
Janaina Wittner

Janaina Wittner

   Strategic Development Manager, WhP International SAS

Janaina is in charge of International Business Development at WhP, a Multilingual Service Provider specialized in Games localisation. She held various localisation management positions with Vivendi Universal Games (Blizzard) and Microsoft. She has been involved with associations to promote localisation technologies and defend standards. She has several presentations at international conferences to her credit and published a number of articles on industry-specific subject matters, with one common objective: sharing the best ways to use new technologies adapted to complex multilingual content deployment, such as online dynamic applications, MMORPG or eLearning.
