When translation technology began playing a role in the translation process in the nineties, certain rules were set that were not to be questioned: 1) the two pillars to translation technology shall be translation memory and terminology databases; 2) the way these technologies work has been settled and shall not be altered; and 3) these pillars shall remain distinct and independent of each other. Once the rules were set, most of the tool developers' focus went into marketing their products, making cosmetic changes to the translation interface, and slowly adding non-translation-related features such as workflow components to their tools. To put it differently: everywhere else technology went into overdrive, but translation technology development went into a virtual coma.

The good news is that this is not where the story ends. The patient has woken up and the formerly unquestionable pillars have started to crumble. What was called translation memory is undergoing a radical makeover, the distinction between translation memories and termbases is fading, and machine translation has joined the twosome as a real productivity tool.

Jost Zetzsche is an EN>DE translator, a localization and translation consultant, and a widely published author of books and articles on technical aspects of translation. A native of Hamburg, Germany, he earned a Ph.D. in the field of Chinese translation history and linguistics, and began working in localization and technical translation in 1997. In 1999, he co-founded International Writers' Group on the Oregon coast. His computer guide for translators, A Translator's Tool Box for the 21st Century, is now in its ninth edition, and his technical newsletter for translators has just passed its 200th edition. In October of this year he and co-author Nataly Kelly will publish a book with Penguin about translation and interpretation for the general public.
