| GALA Report: SDL-TRADOS Merger Survey Results |
| Don DePalma, Common Sense Advisory, Inc. |
| When SDL's shareholders approved the purchase of TRADOS Inc. last month, SDL became by far the largest supplier of translation memory, terminology management, and translation workflow management products. SDL is also one of the world's three largest language services providers (LSP).
This article reports on the results of a GALA survey of language service providers about the impact of this acquisition. Its goal is not to comment on the business sense, wisdom, or moral propriety of this deal, but rather to convey the feelings of the industry about the deal. More. |

| Internationalization Primer: How helping your client solve coding issues can give you a competitive advantage |
| Adam Asnes, Lingoport, Inc. |
| While recent industry headlines have been dominated by merger mania, I think the long term story for GALA companies is really about how to provide better service, products and returns for our customers. That’s how we compete for and keep customers. Within software localization, the functional emphasis is typically on words - word counts, what they cost, when they will be received, translation memories, translation quality, localization engineering and delivery milestones. But for our company, we get involved months, if not years, before our clients are ready to localize. This article aims to show that you can put internationalization to work as a repeatable and successful activity to differentiate your company further as a problem-solver, helping clients get to market faster and more efficiently. | Message From the Board Q3 2005 |
| Hans Fenstermacher, GALA Board Chair |
| Several of our members have recently announced significant developments that will no doubt affect the course of our industry for some time to come. I am referring, of course, to the acquisition of Trados by SDL and the acquisition of Bowne Global Solutions by Lionbridge. While we are sorry to lose two members in this way (;-), we view these events as indicators of the continuing maturation of our industry. More. |

| Christiane Bernier, Merrill Brink International |
| San Francisco was home to a Website Globalization conference this past May 24-25. It was the 11th such annual conference organized by the International Quality and Productivity Center (IQPC.). Overall I found this to be a high quality event with a wide range of case studies that testified to the emergence of best practices and to the continued potential of website globalization to stretch people, processes and technologies to new limits.
