Company description: MISSION STATEMENT
Our mission: Translating our passion for languages into effective market penetration for clients. In addition, we are committed to maintaining our position as the world’s leading provider of African language services.

ABOUT US
Located in Cape Town, South Africa, Folio Translation Consultants was established in 1988 by Philip Zietsman. A new division, Folio Online, was created in 2000 in order to serve international clients via the Internet. The Folio Group is a global leader in the provision of African language services and we also manage a significant volume of work in West and East European and Asian languages. Currently we provide clients access to over 130 languages. Our in-house project managers deal with a sizeable network of vetted independent translators, interpreters, voice-over artists, copywriters, editors, proofreaders and transcribers, rendering Folio the largest translation & language services consultancy in Southern Africa. All the members of our network have to meet exacting standards of professionalism and language proficiency.

SERVICES
TRANSLATION: We offer a professional and high-tech translation service, working together with specialists in many fields, notably in the growth areas of telecommunications, IT, Life Sciences (medical trials, medical devices and pharmaceutical advertisements, packaging and labelling).

COPYWRITING: Scripts, advertising and marketing briefs are handled by a talented creative team.

EDITING & PROOFREADING: This is carried out by qualified editors and copy editors, respected for their expertise and advanced language skills.

TRANSCRIPTIONS: Tapes and voice clips are accurately transcribed with time coding and, if required, translated.

LOCALISATION: We are specialists in the adaptation of content to suit various African target markets – a process that goes beyond translation.

INTERPRETING: Our reliable team of professional interpreters is capable of both simultaneous, consecutive and telephone interpreting.

CHAPERONING/GUIDING: Visitors to South Africa who do not speak English fluently can request a chaperone/guide to interpret at meetings or to provide a full driver-guide service for visits to tourist destinations.

VOICE-OVERS: The voice-over department recruits voice-over artists, makes voice clips available on our website, conducts voice coaching, attends recordings and undertakes production supervision.

QUALITY ASSURANCE AND CONFIDENTIALITY
Folio is committed to accuracy and delivery according to the highest international industry standards. This is achieved by working with reputable and experienced language practitioners who have the relevant tertiary or other professional qualifications. Moreover, they are expected to meet Folio’s rigorous screening process.

Our policy is as follows:
- Translators must be mother-tongue speakers of the languages they specialise in.
- Aspiring language practitioners are required to submit a CV and covering letter upon which they are initially screened. A personal interview follows, during which their spoken language aptitude is assessed.
- Those who pass the interview are required to complete a written test which is set at an advanced level. The applicant must be able to translate texts in several different styles and also be able to tackle typical problems that crop up across the board in translation work.

Note: The screening process described above is adapted for interpreters, editors, proofreaders, transcribers, copywriters and all the members of our network.
- All translations are proofread extensively by the translators themselves.
- Project managers carry out an in-office review, ensuring that all content has been translated and instructions were adhered to.
- If requested, translations can be sent to an additional, independent proofreader to ensure accuracy and high standards. This is charged at our normal proofreading rates.
- Translators make use of established quality assurance principles, but a Linguistic Quality Inspection (LQI) can easily be arranged if the client so requires.
- At Folio, we work at the cutting edge of translation technology, using the latest CAT tools (computer-assisted translation software) such as Trados, Wordfast, SDLX, Logoport and others. Many of these are equipped with up-to-date electronic dictionaries.
- After typesetting, documents are often returned to Folio for a post-DTP check to ensure that no errors have been generated during the set-up process.
- Discretion is non-negotiable in our business. Not only does Folio sign a confidentiality agreement with clients, but all our suppliers are required to sign a non-disclosure agreement at the outset. We store confidential documents in a secure place and no proprietary information is ever released. Original documents are returned to clients upon request.
