Message from the Board Q3 2007

Stephen Ryan, GALA Board Chair

GALA is preparing for an active season of events in Seattle, Wiesbaden, and Boston. I invite you to join us for one or more of these events and to read about some of GALA’s recent activities.

As I jot these few notes, I can feel the close of summer and the chill in the air as autumn begins – or, at least that's the case here in the Northern hemisphere.

This summer, the GALA Board has been engaged in “GALA 2010” planning with the goal of producing a three-year plan outlining the next steps for our growing organization. Leveraging on member feedback from the GALA member meeting in Berlin last June, the plan will detail four areas of long-term strategic focus: Organizational Structure; Visibility; Building Resources and Regional Value. The GALA 2010 Plan will be presented to the GALA membership next month at our Annual Meeting in Seattle, and we are excited to share our plans with you.

In Seattle, GALA will welcome members with a full slate of activities: an all-day negotiating skills workshop; the fifth GALA Annual Meeting; the Localization World conference (produced by MultiLingual Computing and the Localization Institute in cooperation with GALA), and a fun-filled Seattle tour and brunch for members and guests after the conference. Read more about GALA's many activities in Seattle this October on the GALA website .

In November, in Wiesbaden, Germany, GALA will host the Localisation Forum at the 2007 tekom annual conference and trade fair. This is the second year that GALA has partnered with tekom – the largest professional association for technical communication in Europe – to produce industry-specific content for the conference. Later in November, we have partnered with the Gilbane Group for the Conference on Content Management (November 28-29 in Boston).

Elsewhere, continuing with work to build visibility for the language technology and services industry, GALA's new PR/Marketing Specialist Rebecca Petras has been collaborating with a committee of marketing-savvy member volunteers on the marketing component of the GALA 2010 Plan. In addition, many of Rebecca's other efforts this year have been fruitful, including her work to establish our association and industry messaging (also completed with the help of a dedicated team of volunteers). GALA has been mentioned in several “outside-the-industry” publications recently, including a SearchSAP.com podcast on “going global” and an article in DMNews about global marketing.

I look forward to seeing many of you at the member meeting as well as our other upcoming activities in Seattle, and I also look forward to your involvement in our many industry initiatives.

For the GALA Board,

Stephen Ryan
GALA Board Chair
