A New GALAxy
Andrew Joscelyne, Bootstrap
gal-ax-y: n. 1. any of numerous large-scale aggregates of stars, gas and dust – e.g. the Milky Way. 2. an assembly of brilliant, beautiful distinguished persons or things. From Greek galaxias kuklos “milky circle” via Latin and Old French.
Well, not too much gas and dust in this GALAxy, we hope. But over time we'd certainly like to shed more sunlight on the globalization and localization industry. Our focus will be on how we, as service and tool vendors, can add value to our clients&rsquo and our own businesses as well as to our collective actions. In each issue we hope to provide new ideas and experiences from the GALA community that inspire thought leadership in the industry and encourage best practices across our profession.
It goes without saying that as a reader you are part of this assembly of brilliant, beautiful and distinguished persons. Which is of course why you will want to contribute in your own way to the various conversations that make GALAxy a handy tool for learning about and furthering the aims of the globalization and localization industry. Feel free to comment on any of the articles here, or contact the writer for further dialog. Above, make sure you find out what GALA has already achieved and how its agenda is shaping up for the months ahead in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and North and South America.
You may think there are already enough newsletters, mailing lists and websites devoted to globalization and localization issues. In this business, blatant advertorial often rubs shoulders uncomfortably with technical arcana. We believe, though, that GALA as an association is unique in its concern with how the globalization and localization vendor community can work together to raise standards in the stewardship of multilingual communication worldwide. Hence our need to communicate.
With an enlarged European Union, the rapid emergence of a translation culture in Asia, especially China and India, and the emergence of South Africa as a radically multilingual country, in a context of ubiquitous digitalization of content, workflows and processing tools, we certainly have our work cut out. And we believe we have something useful &ndash indeed truly GALActic &ndash to say about these and other issues. We hope you agree.
