A Call to Action for Bloggers: GALA on Technology

During the October 25th GALA Annual Meeting, the Technology Committee formalized its Call to Action for members and the general public to participate in a Blog (Web Log) hosted on the GALA website. This Blog is envisioned as a non-biased open forum for discussion of the technological resources, new developments, and on-going challenges we are faced with in our industry. The Blog will be moderated with a view to keep topics focused on relevant technology issues.
The GALA Technology Committee would like to invite all GALA Members and the General Public to participate in the GALA on Technology Blog (Web Log) found at www.gala-global.org/blog.
The goal of this Blog is to create an easily-accessed forum, where advice, information, and opinions can be shared in a respectful environment uncluttered by spam and other off-topic intrusions. Topics that have already been raised range from member-driven initiatives such as the description of the Okapi Open Source tools initiative, to a call for discussion of Build versus Buy Strategies for Localization Workflow tools of the future. New discussion threads can be opened at any time, and we encourage all Bloggers to post as actively as possible in order to develop the depth of content of the Blog and create an easy-access portal to resources targeted specifically to the needs of both vendors and clients in the Globalization industry.
Of particular interest in the early days of the Blog will be to link up to other resources on the web. Member organizations such as Common Sense Advisory and The Toolkit have a wealth of information on their own sites, and the GALA on Technology Blog would be an excellent location to carry out in-depth discussions of editorial content within their publications. My own company, Alchemy Software Development, has a number of Whitepapers and other resources available on our website that can be downloaded free of charge. Non-member web sites such as Dr. Tom’s Independent Software Reviews and the i18nGurus.com also offer resources and topics for discussion that could be the catalyst for discussions in this forum. GALA Members should feel free to make information available about their own whitepapers, new development announcements, and of course raise discussions of their unique offerings via this Blog.
A critical point I wish to make here is that we must strive to involve members from all corners of our industry, clients, vendors, academics, colleagues, and competitors, to make this a truly informative, sometimes controversial – but always respectful – forum. If we come together to share our thoughts and ideas, and transcend differences caused by competitive agendas or differing opinions, we can then develop the thought-leadership that will help us all grow together as an industry. The vision of the GALA on Technology Blog is to further develop communication amongst our community of international professionals, each of whom play a role of great importance to the delivery of multilingual products and content to the ever-wider Global Market.
Active and persistent Blogging regards relative topics and the aggregation of access points to valuable resources developed by our membership and the industry-at-large will create the greatest value possible, so please get involved!

Craig Myers has been Vice-President, Americas & Asia at Alchemy Software Development since 2001 and has over 15 years experience in IT Globalization. Craig previously served in senior positions in the Tokyo offices of Lionbridge Technologies, ITP (now a division of SDL), and Virgin Interactive Entertainment, where he was the Executive Producer at their Asian Localization Center. He is fluent in Japanese and Spanish, and holds a B.A. in Spanish Linguistics from the University of Oregon in Eugene.
